Financial Planning

Need A Financial Planner?

If any of the situations listed below apply, you may need the services of a financial planner.

Financial planning integrates all areas of your financial life with your life goals and creates a unified plan that maximizes the use of your assets efficiently. The process creates a disciplined plan and a pathway of implementation to ensure success.

  • Have you been through a major life transition lately?
  • Do you want to plan for your future, but don't know where to start?
  • Do you know how much you need to retire and how close you are to it?
  • Are you satisfied with your current investment plan, and know what you are trying to achieve with it?
  • Do you have excess cash flow, but find it difficult to save?
  • Do you understand how your retirement plans will fund your retirement expenses?
  • Do you feel your financial goals and your life goals are not properly aligned?
  • Do you have children who will be attending college and wonder how you will pay the cost?
  • Are you confident you and your loved ones are protected if the unexpected happens?
  • Are you confident your current insurance will provide as expected?

Financial Planning Process Steps
You can expect to gain some or all of the following by completing the financial planning process:
  • Based on our discussion of your goals, we decide together on the scope of the engagement, as well as the cost of the project.
  • If you accept, we sign agreements required by my registered investment advisor, KMS Financial Services, and you pay a portion of the fee, generally 50%. The other 50% will be due upon completion of the plan.
  • You will be given a financial planning packet with questionnaires to fill out, exercises to complete, and specific documents to collect. You then return this completed packet to me. This will provide me with information about your goals, income, expenses, investments, debts, insurance, and other areas of your financial life.
  • Once I receive your detailed information, I begin my analysis. I may contact you during the analysis process to confirm information, discuss assumptions, and ask questions. This may be via email communication, or may require an additional meeting, depending on the complexity of your plan.
  • You receive a written financial plan with specific recommendations unique to your personal priorities and goals. We review the plan together and discuss alternative scenarios. Once completed, you pay the balance of your fee.
  • We discuss whether you would like additional assistance. Additional assistance might include investment management, help with obtaining additional insurance, granting referrals, analyzing different scenarios, etc. These services are provided under a separate agreement.
  • Once completed, a financial plan should be updated at regular intervals, or when you experience major changes in your goals or financial situation.
Financial Planning Process Outcomes
Although each client is unique, most experience the following:

  • A clearer understanding of your own risk tolerance and how to implement an investment plan that will help you meet your goals while remaining within your risk parameters.
  • An analysis and projection of possible goal scenarios. This might include retirement, travel, buying a new home, college costs, etc.
  • An analysis of your current insurance coverage and recommendations.
  • As assessment of your overall estate planning situation (wills, power of attorney, etc.) and recommendations, as well as a review of your current beneficiaries. (Keep in mind that I am not an attorney and do not provide legal advice. If my review identifies any material deficiencies, I would typically recommend you seek qualified legal counsel.)
